Comtel (Beacon) upgrades to El Camino Hospital's main campus and Orchard Pavilion with new R5 nurse call systems and security solutions throughout new construction

The Rauland nurse call system upgrade was a required evolution as the existing R4 nurse call system was no longer supported and end of life by the manufacturer. The natural process is to upgrade these systems as technology from the manufacturer evolves. In this case, we replaced the outdated Rauland R4 nurse call system with the newer R5 nurse call system.

The system utilizes both Rauland R5 hardware and an Rauland software offerings for a complete package. This allowed for integration into the hospital’s existing server infrastructure as well as connectivity to other systems such as Vocera phones.

Each room has different nurse call devices based on their purpose. For example 3rd floor patient rooms have enhanced patient stations, bed interfaces, lighting controls, TV interface, custom 4 button stations (code blue, staff assist, cleaning needed, bed ready see attached), integration to the building fire alarm system, dome light, auxiliary jacks and a staff terminal. While other patient rooms will have other various custom functions and devices based on the needs of the department. Each department varies and has their own specific needs.

Given our industry expertise and standards, we've managed to perfect our design and build strategy to perform all nurse call system upgrades to the R5 system and security solution installations with minimal downtime. Our priority is to get the work completed while ensuring the hospital staff and patient experience are not compromised. We are able to achieve this by keeping room down time to a minimum using our unique scheduling and construction process.

We also speed our process up by pre-wiring our future installation sites for faster room cutovers, and utilize custom four-button stations with configurable Staff Terminals. With our healthcare focused project management and engineering experience, we are able to ensure no more than 4 rooms are own at one time, and patients are back in their rooms quickly.

An interesting fact about this particular project at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, CA is that the pre-work for it started years ago. We had been talking to ECH since 2018 to plan the upgrade to R5. In 2021, we received the contract to design the system, which took from August of 2021 to November of 2022 to complete the design and have it approved by the state of California. And we have been successfully implementing the nurse call system upgrade conversion and installing new security solutions as El Camino Hospital construction, renovations, and additions continue throughout 2024.
